To share our love of music, by engaging and enriching our community through the evolution of the orchestral art form.
We seek to create musical experiences accessible to all and to build community relationships that will transform our cultural dialogue and landscape
Serving the Lowcountry of South Carolina, the Summerville Orchestra (S.O. is the epitome of community serving community. Founded in 2003 by a small group of musicians who wanted to play for the pure joy of it, the S.O. has transformed into one of the largest community orchestras in the nation and was named the 2023 Best Performing Community Orchestra in the U.S. by the American Prize.
While offering programming of full-scale orchestral repertoire, the S.O. is also notable for being a “rogue traditionalist.” Each concert features non-classical music and musical surprises. Under the direction of Wojciech Milewski, the S.O. enhances the community it serves by offering five large concert performances, more than 10 chamber performances, a 10-part adult educational series titled “Music Chats with Wojciech,” a podcast, live-streaming opportunities and, as of 2022, a youth philharmonic.
Conductor Wojciech Milewski is an energetic and dynamic presence on and off the podium. A recent winner of the 2023 American Prize in Conducting, he is also the recipient of the 2019 HSO Harold Farberman Prize, and was a finalist in the 2019 Los Angeles Conducting Competition.
Wojciech is in his eighth season as Music Director of the Summerville Orchestra, and in his fourth season as Music Director of Charleston Opera Theater. Under his baton, the Summerville Orchestra was the winner of the 2023 American Prize in Orchestral Performance, and 2nd place winner of the Vytautas Marijosius award for its innovative programming efforts. Since his tenure as music director began in 2016, the S.O. has started three separate outreach series and a youth orchestra program, commissioned two new works by composers Rene Orth and Chris Pilsner, and expanded in size and scope, effectively doubling its active musician roster. He has collaborated with global artists such as Michael Chioldi, Tuffus Zimbabwe, Cassie Pilgrim, Robert Auler, Phillip Bush, and more. As a conductor, he is passionate about creating lively and interactive concert experiences, fostering community development, audience engagement and inclusion.
In 2016, Wojciech served as Music Director for the world premiere of Joe Illick’s UnShakeable with Santa Fe Opera, which was recently revived in Charleston by Charleston Opera Theater. He also served as Assistant Conductor of the Opera NEO festival in San Diego, and as Associate Conductor at El Paso Opera. Other recent highlights include performances with the Charleston Symphony, Charleston Symphony Youth Orchestra, Henderson Symphony Orchestra, and the Lee County Orchestra (NC).
Off the podium, he maintains an active performing career as a pianist and clarinetist, regularly appearing on both in the Summerville Orchestra’s Encore Series, and performing locally throughout the Charleston area. Previous performing experience includes the second clarinet position with the Roswell Symphony (NM), and solo/featured appearances with Opera Southwest, New Mexico Symphonic Chorus, San Juan Symphony, and the National Broadway Tours of “Wicked” and “Book of Mormon.” He is the current vocal coach and accompanist for the opera department at the College of Charleston.
A native of Poland, Wojciech grew up in New York City. He graduated with distinction with his Master’s of Music in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Mexico, and graduated summa cum laude from the State University of New York at Oswego.
Executive Director Andrew Price of North Charleston is no stranger to the Summerville Orchestra. Price has been principal bassist since joining the orchestra in 2018 and has served as the musicians’ advocate, treasurer, and musicians’ president for the Summerville Orchestra’s Musician Board and was member of the S.O. Board of Directors from 2020-2022.
Price started his first “business” with a friend at the age of 13 called “Stone Pond Helpers,” a group that did a multitude of house jobs from pet sitting, to washing cars, to pop up lemonade stands. His entrepreneurial skills never stopped when he went to college as he became the board president and CEO of “South Carolina Bass Musicians Association,” a state-wide bass association that held yearly conferences and advocated for the double bass and bass guitar through out the eastern United States. Under his lead, the association reached over 500 bass players and caused many students to pursue careers in bass performance.
After leaving college, Price has had a hand in multiple administrative duties in the low country and statewide including event coordinator for South Carolina Music Educators Association, Charleston County School District inventory coordinator, Title IX and arts grant coordinator for C.E. Williams Middle School.
Under his lead of the S.O., Price has increased state funding, increased donations, implemented major foundation changes to increase the staff, and has established the orchestra in the community. His strategic planning skills have expanded the orchestra’s budget each year since the start of his tenure, and has implemented new and innovative resources to help the orchestra become the best in the country.
Price has dedicated his life to the making of music. An accomplished double bass player, he received his bachelor’s in music education and certificate in music performance at the University of South Carolina and recently completed a master’s degree in arts leadership and cultural management (MALCM) from Colorado State University. He served as orchestra director at the North Charleston Creative Arts Elementary School and CE Williams Middle School, earning multiple teaching and conducting awards.
Andrew completed the Non-profit leadership institute at Francis Marion University, was an alternate for the League of American Orchestras Essentials for Orchestral management, and was a class of 2023 Dorchester County/Greater Summerville Chamber’s “Leadership Dorchester” overseeing onsite events for Summerville’s Huger playground
Andrew holds certification in advanced scuba diving and enjoys spending his time with his wife, Olivia, exploring the world.
