Summerville Orchestra Subscription Series 2025-26

The Summerville Orchestra’s 22nd season kicks off with the powerful and passionate melodies of Rachmaninoff, MacMillan, Tormis and Bates. The concert begins with Mason Bates’ Soundcheck in C — written as the opening piece for San Diego’s new concert hall — it’s a perfect way to open up our brand-new season and show off our beautiful SCPAC!

Scottish composer James MacMillan’s “Larghetto” — a transcription of his choral work of the same name — will enchant listeners with its beautiful and lyrical melodies, while Estonian composer Veljo Tormis’ powerful Overture No. 2 closes out the first half. A piece full of energy, booming percussion and brass, it’s a roller coaster ride all the way to the finish!

Our second half features the recent winner of the 2025 edition of the Hilton Head Piano Competition, pianist Jonathan Mamora, as he joins the Summerville Orchestra in a powerful performance of Rachmaninoff’s famous and enchanting Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor.

This concert is sponsored by Anne and Alex Scott and is part of the Subscription Series which is sponsored by Edgeworth Capital Group.

Our second subscription concert of the season features the energetic rhythms and dances of Latin America — tracing its roots to Spain and its many musical influences, all the way to the dance halls of Cuba and Mexico City.

We begin the night with a tour of the nightclubs of Mexico City in Gabriela Ortiz’s Antropolis — booming with energy and an opening timpani solo, it sets the tone perfectly for the evening. Joaquin Turina’s Sinfonia Sevillana takes us on a multi-movement adventure through the musical heart of Spain, as we explore different dances and folk melodies.

The second half opens with a tribute to our veterans for Veteran’s Day weekend, as we perform Bob Lowden’s arrangement of Armed Forces Salute. The orchestra then performs the energetic and iconic sounds of Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story, in a great arrangement by Maurice Peress, and we close the concert with Maurice Ravel’s Bolero. A piece that needs no introduction, it’s a celebration of every section of the orchestra and its musicians!

This concert is sponsored by Lee and Nancy Zimmerman and is part of the Subscription Series which is sponsored by Edgeworth Capital Group.

Join the orchestra as we partner with the Singers of Summerville and Goose Creek High School, both under the direction of Emily Bohl, to present a concert of holiday music from around the world.

Presenting popular arrangements of “Carol of the Bells,” “Silent Night,” “Christmas Festival,” “Sleigh Ride,” “O Come All Ye Faithful” and more, the concert will also feature new arrangements of beautiful carols from around the world, including the Huron Carol from Canada, “Infant Holy, Infant Lowly” from Poland, Brazilian Sleigh Bells, an energetic version of “Riu, Riu Chiu” from Spain and Catalonia, and more!

You won’t want to miss this global journey of amazing holiday music!

This concert is sponsored by Holly and Joe Fontanetta & St. George’s Episcopal Church of Summerville and is part of the Subscription Series which is sponsored by Edgeworth Capital Group.

The S.O.’s first concert of 2026 features a celebration of love and valor, as we honor the beginning of America’s 250th anniversary, and ring in Valentine’s Day weekend in style.

The first half features music from John Williams’ soundtrack to “The Patriot,” a movie telling the story of the fight for American independence in South Carolina and Georgia, which was filmed in Charleston and Summerville! We continue with the iconic music from Max Steiner’s Casablanca — a romantic drama filmed and set during World War II. The first half ends with a performance by one of our very own S.O. musicians – the winner of the Summerville Orchestra Concerto Competition!

The second half features Claude Debussy’s enchanting and hypnotizing music from L’Après-midi d’un faune (The Afternoon of a Faun), and a rare performance of British composer Ruth Gipps’ Symphony No. 2.

This concert is sponsored by The Anthony & Janice Oglietti Charitable Fund and is part of the Subscription Series which is sponsored by Edgeworth Capital Group.

A celebration of pioneering composers and music sees the S.O. present Brahms’ iconic Symphony No. 2 alongside music by Academy Award winner Hildur Guðnadóttir, film composers Randy Edelman and Trevor Jones and French composer Ferdinand Hérold.

The first half opens with an exciting overture by Hérold to his opera Zampa, an opera all about pirates and love (yes!) whose overture is still popular today. The orchestra then presents a piece by Hildur Guðnadóttir in a style the orchestra has never performed — a graphic score! The orchestra will be improvising and composing in front of your eyes during From the Other Place, a short piece depicting serene and static harmonies. We change gears to end the first half with the energetic and famous soundtrack to Edelman’s and Jones’ The Last of the Mohicans.

The second half of the concert features the colossal Symphony No. 2 in D major by Johannes Brahms — a pastoral piece similar to Beethoven’s 6th Symphony and a celebration of Classical and Romantic forms of music.

This concert is sponsored by House Theatre with support from Pinnacle Financial Partners and is part of the Subscription Series which is sponsored by Edgeworth Capital Group.

A magical and enchanting finish to our 22nd season! Join the S.O. as we perform the music of fairy tales, stories and more!

The concert opens with Michael Kamen’s soundtrack to Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. We then present the Prologue to Bianca da Molena (The White Dove) by Polish composer Mieczysław Karłowicz and then finish our first half with a collaboration with our S.O. Youth Philharmonic! The combined orchestras of the S.O. and the S.O.Y.P. will perform two pieces to end the first half — the “Legend of Ashitaka” from Joe Hisaishi’s soundtrack to Princess Mononoke and the “Festmarch” from Carl Nielsen’s Aladdin.

To close out our 22nd season, the orchestra performs the magical music of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. A musical journey through 1001 Arabian Nights, it is full of lush and singable melodies and something you’ll be humming all summer long.

This concert is sponsored by Grace Strobel and is part of the Subscription Series which is sponsored by Edgeworth Capital Group.
