Betty Settle – Violin
I began playing violin in the 5th grade. I played 2nd violin all the way through junior high and senior high school. Furman University did not have an orchestra when I was there, so I did not have an opportunity to play again until after I retired. I had two careers: first, I worked as a claims representative with the Social Security Administration for 15 years; then, for 20 years, I did retirement planning as an agent of New York Life Insurance Co. When we started the Summerville Community Orchestra in 2003, there were only 15 musicians gathered for the first rehearsal. Again, I was the second fiddle, which I really enjoyed playing. It is thrilling to see the Summerville Orchestra’s growth over the years to the approximately 75 gifted musicians it is today. In addition to playing the violin and piano, I love to play canasta with my friends at the Village at Summerville.
