Set Your Sails for Summerville Orchestra Junior and Youth Philharmonic’s First Concert

The Summerville Orchestra Junior Philharmonic and Youth Philharmonic will perform their first concert at Fort Dorchester High School on February 18th at 3 pm. The concert, Sounds of the Seafarers, will include a mariner theme and features “Song of the Sea Mariner” and “Viking” by Soon Hee Newbold, as well as a “Pirates of the Caribbean” medley. The orchestra will perform a mix of classical and contemporary composers, as well as fiddle music.

Founded in September of 2022 thanks to a $20,000 grant provided by the South Carolina Arts Commission, the Summerville Orchestra Junior and Youth Philharmonics are both led by director and conductor DeAnndra Glenn. This is their first hosted concert, but not the first time seeing the Youth Philharmonic in action. In November, the S.O. Youth Philharmonic had the opportunity to perform alongside the Summerville Orchestra under the direction of composer Chris Pilsner for his piece “Snow Falling in Autumn.”

“It was amazing to see the energy that the Summerville Orchestra has,” Pilsner said. “From the start to finish, it is evident that they love what they are doing! I’m so glad that I had the opportunity to experience this with them and conduct my own piece.”

Offering two individual concerts a season is a goal of the S.O. Youth and Junior Philharmonics that will highlight the accomplishments of these young musicians.

Tickets for the show are available online at SummervilleOrchestra.Ludus.com Tickets for those 18 and under are $2. Adult tickets are $10
