Our first subscription concert of the year, Music of a New America, traces that journey: from the grandeur of the German Romantic tradition to the folk melodies of the British Isles, from the influence of French modernism to the cinematic brilliance of Hollywood, culminating in a uniquely American symphonic voice.

The evening opens with the thrilling overture to Der Freischütz by Carl Maria von Weber, a landmark of German Romanticism whose dramatic style helped shape the modern orchestra. The program continues with Tree of Life by Holland Albright and Soay by Rebecca Dale, two lyrical contemporary works inspired by rich musical traditions and folk influences. The first half concludes with the iconic Raiders March by John Williams, celebrating the enduring impact of film music on American culture. After intermission, the orchestra performs Symphony No. 2 by William Grant Still, a powerful and hopeful work blending classical, jazz and blues influences into a uniquely American symphonic voice.

Tonight, we celebrate not only these remarkable composers, but the generations of musical traditions, cultures, and stories that helped shape the sound of America itself.

This concert is sponsored by Anne and Alex Scott and is part of the Subscription Series which is sponsored by Edgeworth Capital Group.
